Symantec code theft may not be big deal
It was huge news when RSA owned up to the stunning cyber attack in March that stole information that could compromise its vaunted SecureIT tokens. That a preeminent security company could be hacked was a wake-up call to all security executives.
So perhaps we shouldn’t be too surprised that another big security firm has been hacked. Symantec has said that a group of hackers--known as the Lords of Dharmaraja--had successfully infiltrated the company network to steal source code to two older Symantec enterprise products, Symantec Endpoint Protection 11, an older version, and Symantec Antivirus 10.2, which had previously been discontinued.
eWeek reports that many experts say that knowledge of source code is not a decisive advantage for hackers. Nor do many people think Symantec will suffer in the market. Other security software companies--Kapersky last year and Microsoft several years ago--were not dealt long-term setbacks. While the fallout will likely be limited, this is not an admission that a security firm would like to make.
In any case, it is yet another reminder that no company, no matter how savvy with security, is safe from the hackers. All need to redouble their efforts.
