Scandals and economic hardship tend to give rise to various reform efforts, often with the best of intentions. But the total effect may be a mish-mash of mini Sarbanes-Oxleys across states and industries that could be confusing for large enterprises. Case in point: a new Colorado reg called the Fair Accountable Insurance Rates (FAIR) Act. It aims to provide easy access to health care and automobile insurance coverage for all Coloradans, and would create new reporting requirements for insurers. Some call it Colorado's version of Sarbanes-Oxley or the insurance industry, which sounds great. But you see what I mean if all states decide to act. Some already are calling for mini-Sarboxes for mortgage companies and the like. I guess this is the way it has always been, and why compliance talent will always be in high demand.
