Jeff Skilling wants out of jail on bail
Jeff Skilling--the reviled former CEO of Enron (Enron news) and poster child of the Sarbanes-Oxley era--continues to press his case for freedom. The convicted felon is currently serving a 24-year jail term, but his hopes soared in June, when the Supreme Court ruled that the "honest services" law under which he was prosecuted couldn't be applied to his case.
Based on that ruling, Skilling's lawyers have asked an appeals court to release him on bail while he pursues his legal options, according to Bloomberg. Skilling also requested that his convictions be reversed and he be granted a new trial.
It's unclear how the High Court ruling will be interpreted. But it's fair to say Skilling has a better chance now of getting out of jail early, if only temporarily. If he is freed on bail, it will be an apt symbol for the post-Enron, anti-crime movement, which racked up some high profile victories but failed to fix the system completely.
