The need for better methods of storing data isn't going away. In some regards the issue is becoming more acute. The growth of digital data is threatening to spiral out of control. IDC has calculated that more than 452 exabytes of information have been created and replicated this year, which exceeds the world's available storage capacity.

Of course, not all of this is mission critical data. Still, this is one of those compliance problems that will never go away. Among the ten tips offered by director of the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC): Use metadata; make multiple copies of critical data, at different sites; plan for transitions in stewardship; and plan ahead for new storage media.
