Goldman Sachs accused of stealing data
To the list of Goldman Sachs' (NYSE: GS) legal troubles, you can now add this: Ipreo Holdings, which provides software and market intelligence services for investment banking and other clients, has accused it of stealing proprietary information.
According to ComputerWorld, the lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, charges that several employees of Goldman Sachs illegally accessed an Ipreo database called Bigdough, which Ipreo markets as a comprehensive listing of "buy-side portfolio and asset managers, sell-side institutions, funds and 80,000 contacts in the financial industry." The company says it has more than 16,000 subscribers to the database.
Specifically, Ipreo says the Bigdough database was accessed illegally at least 264 times by Goldman Sachs employees using login credentials that belonged to someone else. The suit also says that in discussions with Goldman Sachs, the bank admitted that the IP addresses associated with the illegal logins belonged to it, but it also sought to portray the breaches as the work of a single employee. My guess is that this will settle quietly.
