Financial reform may have to wait
Most people assumed that 2009 would be the year to kick off a whole new era of regulation. We've certainly seen some eye-catching proposals, but the focus has shifted to health care in a big way. Reuters now reports, "With no clear path forward in the Senate, analysts and lobbyists said Democrats would be hard-pressed to enact tighter bank and capital market rules by year-end, a deadline self-imposed months ago by the White House."
Some reform efforts may pass the house only to stall in the senate. Some people-including some big-name politicians are still hoping that reform can be passed this year, but it is looking much less likely. This may aid the industry in that any delay will lessen the public outrage, allowing for a less emotional debate. But you can rest assured that the issue will not go away. You still need to anticipate some big changes.
