Enduring fight: CFOs vs. CIOs

The rift between the CFO and the CIO is near mythic in many places. It's one of those common flashpoints that almost define the job--kind of like bankers versus traders on Wall Street. There has been a lot of talk about mending those rifts, but it certainly wasn't improved by the recent financial crisis, which boosted the pressure on everyone and made peace and harmony a lower priority.

CFO.com notes that during one of its recent seminars, "several finance chiefs said, both in private discussions and in open sessions that they're often exasperated by CIOs' lack of attention to business fundamentals and prudent risk management." One called them "essentially faith-based initiatives."

CIOs can complain with some justification that CFOs just don't get technology. Judith Glaser, CEO of Benchmark Communication, has looked at these issues and come up with some interesting findings, one of which is that IT guys see the issue in less dire terms than their finance counterparts.
