Remember the data breach that landed the Bank of New York Mellon in the headlines? Well, it was worse than initially reported. More than 12 million people had their personal info--including social security numbers--lost by a third-party courier, Archive Systems. That's 9 million more than originally reported, notes Financial Week. The firm was transporting the unencrypted computer tapes to a storage site in February when they went missing. Odd. The bank says there is no evidence that the information has been used illegally in any way. No doubt BONY/Mellon thought it could rely on its third-party solution, but that may not be enough to keep it out of legal hot water. Private suits and state charges are a distinct possibility. You may want to check your policies one more time.
